2 Months In!

Updates!

  • I started Spanish classes a few weeks ago and I really enjoy them even though they are early in the morning. There’s only three other students in my class so we have a lot of time to work on things that we want and not just go by the book. I learn something new every class.

  • In September I went to Paysandu with my host family to visit my host dad’s side of the family. Paysandu is considered more of the country here. There’s cows and horses. It was really fun to travel a little bit and I can’t wait to go back for Christmas but I’m also glad that I live here in a bigger city by the water.

  • I’ve gotten comfortable taking the bus to a different part of Ciudad de la Costa called El Pinar and I go there a lot to see my friend Elise and my YFU volunteer who lives there.

  • I started going to a gym which I actually enjoy a lot. It’s quite different here because the people who work there basically train and coach you the whole time. Surprisingly, it’s super fun and it helps me sleep better in the night time, cope with culture shock, and feel better about eating so much Uruguayan junk food.

  • I went to my first party which I was super excited for. I just love that at parties here they dance all night, it’s so fun! My host sister and I left at about 4am but the dancing went as late as 6 in the morning.

  • I’ve been making a lot of bracelets in my free time because it’s a mindless task with a usable outcome. So far I’ve gifted like 7 bracelets to my friends and family.

  • I finally found a place to try flan but I did not like it. Nobody told me it was made from egg yolk and maple syrup.

  • I’ve been watching a lot of soccer games. They’re kind of fun and give me a chance to practice bad words in Spanish. My favorites are "La concha de la lora," "abombado," and "boluda."

  • I went to my first ‘scouts’ meeting on Saturday. It’s a group that my YFU volunteer introduced me to, so I can make friends and memories. I actually liked it! They meet every week and do fundraisers and community service, and they also do a lot of “adventures” like camping trips and mountain climbing and who knows what else. The group is super nice and accepted me with open arms and lots of questions. Next weekend we are going to have a sleepover.
